Marketplace algorithms changed, but the winning pattern did not: narrow gigs, fast responses and proposals that reference the brief.

New sellers compete against thousands of profiles. Winning early means being obviously right for a small set of jobs rather than acceptable for all of them.

Narrow the gig until it feels too small

'Video editing' competes with everyone. '30-second Shopify product reels with captions, 48-hour delivery' competes with almost nobody, and it is easier to price.

Respond within the hour

Response speed materially affects both ranking and win rate. Set notifications and reply during the client's working hours.

Write proposals in three paragraphs

Their problem restated, your relevant sample with one line on the result, and a clear scope with timeline. Nothing else.

Deliver for the review

The first project's real payment is the review. Over-communicate, deliver early once, and ask for feedback that names the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

How many proposals before the first order?
Typically 20 to 40 tailored proposals. Volume alone does not work; relevance to the brief does.
Should I start with very low prices?
Start slightly below market for two or three jobs to gain reviews, then move to normal rates. Staying cheap attracts difficult clients.
